Now that some years have gone by since your original post and most ecommerce sites seem to have taken up the call for multi-faceted filtered navigation, are you seeing any best practice / usability issues emerge between left hand vertical filters vs horizontal filters at the top of the page? 

Some sites fix the filter to the top of the browser (eg http://www.tedbaker.com/men%27s/men%27s_clothing/tops_+_t-shirts/list.aspx) but the expanded filters cover the products. Have you seen any sites do horizontal filters really well, as I have a feeling that, done well, they could be more user friendly than the almost ubiquitous left hand filters.</description>

One of our partner companies is Fred Hopper who provide multi-faceted navigation solutions, combined with other key merchandising tools.

Other than this I don&#039;t just know a list of other solutions that are available in the marketplace although I&#039;m sure there will be some solutions that fit your requirements.

Don&#039;t forget that it is all well and good having these powerful solutions, but its critical that time and effort is spent with end users in making sure the user experience works well and visitors will actively engage with this type of product filtering without getting confused.
